Sull'etimologia di Strighąr (San Cosmo Albanese)

IL PROF. GIOVANNI BELLUSCIO RISPONDE AL PROF. VINCENZO BELMONTE

Une mendoj/pėnxonj ndryshe dhe, njera/deri sot, etimologjia ēė mė duket mė e pranueshme/aēetabile mė duket ajo e profesorit E. P. Hamp, e botuar nė artikulin “An identificatory listing of the arbėresh settlements of Calabria today”, ēė mund tė lexohet i tėrė nė vėllimin: Toponomastica calabrese, Atti del I Congresso Internazionale di Toponomastica Calabrese, Rende, Acri, San Sosti, Castrovillari, 26-29 maggio 1997, (a cura di J.B. Trumper, A. Mendicino, M. Maddalon), Gangemi Editore, Roma.

Strighariotėt mund tė ndihen mė mirė se mė parė, ėmri i katundit tė tire s’ka ēė tė bėjė me...koprenė!

“San Cosmo Albanese, com. in CS, di popolazione albanese, chiamato in alb. Strigār [now written Strighari, but B-S 1997 with g which Tagliavini wrote for [g] even though g g in S. Cosmo] forse nome del suo fondatore (C19[citing Zangari 1941 and Kamsi 1939]) [DTOC 287b]. Carla Marcato [DNGI 456b], who does not mention the Arbėresh name: In dialetto san cuósmu o san cuósimu, il toponimo č variante del nome di San Cosma, patrono del paese con San Damiano. Giordano 1963 oddly gives only Shėn Kozmąi as the Arbėresh form, apparently albanizing in error; it seems that Tajani 1896 confused another occurrence of the saint in recording the mandamento as S. Sosti although the diocesi correctly. Note for this name that As Commą (kosma'") occurs in the Salento [CSSSL 96] The str- in the native name suggests an Italian origin, and not an Albanian. A Calabrese i could match a northern e; G.M.G. Belluscio reminds me that in S. Cosmo [g] is the espected Calabrese g. Therefore I suggest that [stri’gar] is a derivative of strega - “witch, magara, to bewitch’. I therefore conclude that our name is not the name of a founder vel sim., but is a folk appellative at the patron saint(s). B-S 1997 44: Founded 1471. Tagliavini ibid. “etnico strigārjot, plur. -(ė)ra”, with g for [g]. B-S. B-S 1997 (Punkt 12).”
